Harvest time is upon us

Harvest time is upon us

It’s that time of the year in the southeast were most farmers growing hemp will be starting to harvest their crop. Hopefully you have already made the decision to harvest appropriately based on the objectives for your crops final destination. Have you been growing for grain, fiber or oil? That is the question. Having done quite a bit of consulting work this season so far for our Alabama Hemp farmers, I have seen a wide variety of strains being grown from all over our state.

Most all have been growing for CBD oil production and very few for the other uses. Not all strains are going to produce the desires you intended especially if your plants have been pollinated. Some are showing very low CBD numbers while others showing very high percentages of CBD. Many of the strains showing high CBD’s are also showing high levels of THC as well. This will be a problem for many farmers.

If you’ve had your plants tested and are ready to harvest then you need to get moving. Some are growing small enough plots were you can hand harvest and others don’t have that luxury and need to harvest with machines. Either way harvesting needs to been done quickly. This isn’t a crop you can just take a month to cut down. This needs to happen like within a week maybe two but not recommended.

If you have been growing to produce very high quality oil than you should know that mass scale harvesting will produce the least desirable results. Hand harvesting is really the preferred choice. This takes time and special care of the plants especially if your strains are showing mature flowers with amazing trichome production. In order to do this you need help in the field and a lot of it.

Most importantly is how you’re going to dry, cure and store your material before it gets to a processor if that’s your intention. Drying in a barn or a greenhouse is not the answer. For optimal quality your plants need to dry in a controlled environment with a RH sweet spot of 50% -55% and a temp of about 68 to 72 degrees. This is optimal with a drying period of about 8 to 12 days depending on the finish of the strain.

We process our farmer’s crops using the latest Sub and Supercritical C02 Extraction technologies. Our process produces the highest quality Raw Full Spectrum oil. In our opinion Raw Full Spectrum is the cleanest and most pure way to consume cannabinoids.

In one run we can produce high grade oil with no post processing involved all while preserving amazing terpene profiles. This allows us to strip the material in the plant you’re looking for in the gentlest and cleanest way possible for human consumption.

Most processors in the United States use Ethanol extraction processes. Because alcohol is used as a solvent it needs to go through steps of post processing like winterization and distillation. During this process the plant goes through extreme temperature changes resulting in a degradation of the end product. I know it is a very popular and accepted way of extraction but unfortunately it is just not the purest or best way to extract for the end user to consume in the most beneficial raw way.

Whatever method you choose to use make sure your product is very clean and free of pesticides, molds & fungus, grit, dirt and any metals. All processors should be testing the material before committing to a crop. We only process the highest quality material and so should other processors so it is important that your crop is to the highest standards. Most material will be processed for the mid wholesale market and private label. If you feel you have produced some exceptional plants be sure to find and process that has the ability to move that oil into high grade markets demanding maximum dollar per kilo. If you can accomplish that then you have done a very good job this year and your bank account should show it.

If we can help you in anyway feel free to reach out. Happy Harvesting!
